The Doors se formó en Los Angeles en 1965. Tomó su nombre del libro de Aldous Huxley, The Doors of Perception (Las puertas de la percepción), cuyo título se referenciaba a una cita de William Blake que dice: "If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite."
